BBC Academy: 2018 - present
For the past six years I have been responsible for the research, instructional design (storyboarding/scripting), delivery and evaluation of learning experience solutions at BBC Academy.
Here are some examples of my work. Use the carousels below to view the material. Select the arrow to move through the carousel and select an image to fully expand it.
1. Digital induction - weekly themed pathways
Extensive research showed that new starters were overwhelmed by their induction experience. With the data acquired, I redesigned a digital induction that would help staff feel connected to their team/wider BBC, feel like they're making a valuable contribution and that they have direction/purpose. I broke down the content into manageable chunks so that it spans a new starter's first 30 days. Produced in Articulate Storyline, the new induction is bold, encompasses strong employer brand and captures the magic of core BBC brands.
2. Digital induction - virtual tour of the BBC
The interactive tour supports the learning pathway and provides a window into the world of each BBC department. Built in a bespoke authoring tool, users can pan around a virtual 360 environment and engage with audio, video, and interactive content. The aim is to bring different areas of the BBC together, showcase how staff collaborate and shine a light on the people who make the BBC what it is.
3. Safeguarding for adult talent
I came to understand that talent/media stars are notoriously short for time and need something that will grab their attention. Working in partnership with the BBC’s Safeguarding lead and the head of Safety, I designed a short course that would appeal to the hearts of learners, making them think about behaviour they may encounter. Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s exhibition, my vision was to create a striking and colourful course with bite-sized content that drew on the principles of andragogy. Built in Evolve, I referred to real-life scenarios and provided opportunity for the learner to practise in a safe environment.
4. VLE/LMS learning pathways and groups
I have delivered learning as part of a pathway or ‘group’ within our learning management system (LMS). Despite platform limitations, I was resourceful when it came to the design, pushing the look and feel. In the example of ‘Regenerate your skills’, my aim was to recreate the iconic Doctor Who TARDIS by mirroring a technique used on Instagram. The sections linked to different themed pathways of content. Similarly, I’ve created learning pathways that collate resources related to a particular topic. Content can include articles, videos, exercises and external material. They have proven popular in guiding learners at a time that is convenient for them.
5. Impartiality: The essentials
Impartiality is a core pillar of the BBC’s strategy and there has been renewed focus on it. I was responsible for pitching a short course to the Head of BBC News. The course emphasised the importance of impartiality, how it works in principle and how to navigate editorial grey areas. Built in Articulate Rise, the course contained numerous content examples allowing staff to practise in a safe environment. I interjected several formative assessments across the course with immediate feedback to help cement the learning points.
